Little Kitty Baby Beanie

Baby hats are fun and satisfying knitting projects. Their small size makes them easy to complete in a matter of hours. They don't require much yarn, with some designs using less than a skein. You can even splurge on luxury yarn, such as cashmere. Knitting a baby hat is a way to try out a novelty yarn or stitch pattern without making a major commitment. Start with a simple hat and let your creativity inspire you to make one-of-a-kind variations.

I had lots of fun making these two baby hats

Size: New born
Hat measures 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter; length 5 inches (13 cm) from rim to crown.

Materials:
Size 4 mm (5 US) needles
DK weight yarn White,  pink or blue.
For nose ,eyes and mouth DK weight yarn black
For ears and whiskers eyelash type yarn pink or blue

21.5 sts= 4 inches (10 cm)

Instructions
Hat
Starting at brim, with  pink or blue CO 64 sts and work in K2, p2 until brim measures 1 inch (3 cm) from beg.
Then work in St st

6 rows pink or blue
6 rows white
6 rows pink or blue
4 rows white

Shape Top Of Hat
Still in white  *k2 tog, k7 rep from* to last 2 sts k2tog- 56 st
Next row : Purl
Change to Pink or blue  knit 1 row then purl 1 row
Continuing in stripe sequence as established, shape top and finish:
Row 1 (RS) K 1, *k 4, k2tog; rep from * to last st, k 1 - 47 sts.
Rows 2, 4 and 6 Purl.
Row 3 K 1, *k 3, k2tog; rep from * to last st, k 1 - 38 sts.
Row 5 K 1, *k 2, k2tog; rep from * to last st, k 1 - 29 sts.
Row 7 K 1, *k2tog; rep from * across - 15 sts.
Row 8 *P2tog; rep from * to last st, p 1 - 8 sts.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing seam. With large-eyed blunt needle, thread tail through remaining sts on needle. Pull tightly and secure. Sew back seam.

EAR - Make 2
With eye lash yarn, cast on 16 sts. and knit 3 rows. Pass all sts, 1 at a time, over first st. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining st and pull to tighten.

NOSE
With Black , cast on 5 sts.
Row 1 Knit.
Rows 2 and 4 Purl.
Row 3 K2tog, k 1, k2tog - 3 sts.
Row 4 Purl.
Row 5 K3tog - 1 st.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining st; pull to tighten.


FINISHING
Using photo as a guide, place Ears  and sew to each side of Hat about 1inch apart. Sew Nose in place, embroider smile. With eyelash yarn, embroider 3 whiskers on each side of Nose using Stem st. With white, embroider iris. With black, outline Eyes.

Easy Fun Froggy Hat

Staying with the stash busting new years resolution I had some green yarn that needed using up so I decided to make a childs Froggy hat. Frogs are rather cute and this is a fun easy pattern with no complicated stitched or shaping.

Sizes 3 years (4-5 years, 6-7 years)

Finished Measurements
Hat circumference: 16 (18, 20)" (40.5 [45.5, 51]cm)
Materials
1 skein Green double knitting type yarn
Size 7 (4.5mm) 16" (40cm) circular needle
Size 7 (4.5mm) double-pointed needles, set of 5
Size 5 (3.75mm) double-pointed needles, set of 5
Stitch markers
Yarn needle
2 black buttons or 2 frog eyes, 3⁄4" (19mm) in diameter
Small amount of black worsted-weight yarn

Hat

Using the circular needle, cast on 72 (80, 88) stitches. Join, being careful not to twist stitches. Place a marker for the beginning of the round. Work in stockinette stitch (knit every round) until the piece measures 41⁄2 (5, 51⁄2)" (11.5 [12.5, 14]cm) from the beginning.

Shape Crown
NOTE: Change to the larger double-pointed needles when the number of stitches has been sufficiently decreased.
Round 1: *K6, k2tog; repeat from * around-63 (70, 77) stitches.
Round 2: Knit.
Round 3: *K5, k2tog; repeat from * around-54 (60, 66) stitches.
Round 4: Knit.
Round 5: *K4, k2tog; repeat from * around-45 (50, 55) stitches.
Round 6: Knit.
Round 7: *K3, k2tog; repeat from * around-36 (40, 44) stitches.
Round 8: Knit.
Round 9: *K2, k2tog; repeat from * around-27 (30, 33) stitches.
Round 10: Knit.
Round 11: *K1, k2tog; repeat from * around-18 (20, 22) stitches.
Round 12: Knit.
Round 13: K2tog around-9 (10, 11) stitches.
Cut the yarn, leaving a long end. Use the yarn needle to thread the end through the remaining stitches. Draw together tightly and fasten off.

Eye(make 2)
Using the larger double-pointed needles, cast on 20 stitches. Divide the stitches onto 4 needles-5 stitches per needle. Join, being careful not to twist stitches. Place a marker for the beginning of the round.
Rounds 1-4: Knit.
Round 5: On the first needle, k2tog, k to the end of the needle; on the second needle, k to the last 2 stitches, k2tog; on the third needle, k2tog, k to the end of needle; on the fourth needle, k to the last 2 stitches, k2tog-4 stitches remain on each needle.
Rounds 6-7: Repeat round 5 twice-2 stitches remain on each needle. Slip stitches from the first and second needles onto the first needle; slip stitches from the third and fourth needles onto the third needle. Cut the yarn, leaving a long end. Hold the first and third needles parallel to each other and use the yarn end to graft the stitches together.

Finishing
Sew a large button to one side of each Eye or attach a frog eye or embroider black circle and green french knot in center . Stuff the Eye with about 60" (152.5cm) of matching yarn. Sew Eyes to the top of the Hat. With black yarn, embroider a backstitch or chainstitch mouth and nose on the Hat. Weave in ends.

Baby 'Bunny Hat'

This little bunny has two little eyes.                      
This little bunny is very wise.
This little bunny is soft as silk.
This little bunny is white as milk.
This little bunny nibbles away
At cabbages and carrots the livelong day

I couldn't resist knitting this bunny hat, i had seen one very similar on sale in Next. Ofcourse this was nowhere near as expensive and took hardly any time at all to knit. The size in the photo is 3/6 months.
Bunny Hat Sizes
To fit baby sizes: 3/6 (12/18) mos.

MATERIALS: baby double knit type yarn 1 ball each MC: White A: Pink

Set of four size 4 mm (U.S. 6) double- pointed knitting needles and pair of size 4 mm (U.S. 6) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge for eyes- embroidery floss.

GAUGE
22 sts and 30 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smaller size. If changes are necessary for larger size the instructions will be written in bracketts ( ).
HAT
Lining:

Beg at top of crown, with A, cast on 8 sts leaving a 6 ins [15 cm] end. Divide sts evenly on 3 needles (2, 3, 3 sts). Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
1st rnd: Knit, inc 1 st in each st around. 16 sts. 2nd and alt rnds: Knit.
3rd rnd: *K1. Inc 1 st in next st. Rep from * around. 24 sts.
5th rnd: *K2. Inc 1 st in next st. Rep from * around. 32 sts.
7th rnd: *K3. Inc 1 st in next st. Rep from * around. 40 sts.
Cont in this manner, inc 8 sts evenly around following alt rnds until there are 80 (88) sts. Place marker on last rnd. Knit even in rnds until work from beg measures 9 (10) ins [23 (25.5) cm].         

                                                               

 Outer Hat: Change to MC and knit in rnds until work from color change (fold line) measures same length as Lining to marker.
Shape top: 1st rnd: *K8 (9). K2tog. Rep from * around. 72 (80) sts.
2nd and alt rnds: Knit.
3rd rnd: *K7 (8). K2tog. Rep from * around. 64 (72) sts.
5th rnd: *K6 (7). K2tog. Rep from * around. 56 (64) sts.
Cont in this manner, dec 8 sts evenly around following alt rnds until there are 16 sts. Break yarn, leaving a long end. Draw end tightly through rem sts and fasten securely. Weave end at crown of lining tightly through cast on sts and fasten securely.
Fold Lining into Outer Hat along fold line. Fold up cuff as shown.

BUNNY EARS (make 2).
With MC, cast on 13 sts, then with A, cast on 10 sts. 23 sts.
Note: When changing colors, twist the 2 colors around each other where they meet on WS to avoid a hole.
1st row: (RS). With A, P10. With MC, K13.
2nd row: With MC, P13. With A, K10. Rep last 2 rows 8 times more (18 rows total).
Shape top: 1st row: (RS). With A, P2tog. P6. P2tog. With MC, K2tog. K9. Sl1. K1. psso.
2nd and alt rows: Work even in pat.
3rd row: With A, P2tog. P4. P2tog. With MC, K2tog. K7. Sl1. K1. psso.
5th row: With A, P2tog. P2. P2tog. With MC, K2tog. K5. Sl1. K1. psso.
7th row: With A, (P2tog) twice. With MC, K2tog. K3. Sl1. K1. psso.
9th row: With A, P2tog. With MC, K2tog. K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Break yarn leaving a long end of MC. Draw MC end tightly through rem 4 sts and sew side seam.

Sew Ears in position and embroider eyes, nose and mouth.
