Pumpkin Baby Set

There's just something adorable about a cute little hat on a baby's head. Since knitting baby hats takes no time at all, you can have one (or more!) for every holiday.

This pumpkin hat is designed for newborns to babies of about 12 months, depending on the size of baby's head. It's practical, since it's getting cool most places by the end of October, and it makes a great quick "costume" with the addition of a Halloween colored onesie. Booties and mittens to match.

100grm Orange Double Knit yarn (8 ply yarn. (11wpi) )

50grm Green Double Knit yarn (8 ply yarn. (11wpi) )

3.75mm Knitting Needles

4mm knitting Needles or size needed to obtain gauge

Tapestry Needle

GAUGE

4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm.) in stockinette stitch: 22 stitches x 28 rows with larger needles.

P: purl

M1: make 1 by knitting front and back of next stitch.

K2tog: knit 2 stitches together

K2togtbl: knit 2 stitches together through the back of loop.

Instructions.

Using your smaller needles and Orange yarn cast on 66(72)(78), place stitch marker and join to begin knitting in the round.

Work 8 rows in stockinette stitch

Change to your larger needles and continue in stockinette until the hat measures 4 ¼,(4 ¾)(5) ins (11,(12)(13)cm)

Knit 1 Round

Cut the yarn, leaving a tail about 3feet long. Close the top of the hat by drawing yarn through all but 4 of the remaining stitches. Pull tight and fasten securely on the inside. Bring the yarn back through to the outside, just to the right of the needle containing the 4 remaining stitches. Work 4-st I-cord* for 1.5 inches and fasten off by drawing thread through stitches, pulling tight and fastening securely.
Weave in ends.

continue in stockinette stitch until work measures 10(12) (14) cm [4” (4,75”) (5,50”)] including cuff.

Cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing and thread a tapestry needle, then thread through all stitches and pull tightly to close the tip. Sew the side seam.

'Thoughful Thursday' Click For Babies

Click your needles together to knit baby caps and help educate about and prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome!

Click for Babies is a public health initiative that allows knitters and crocheters to support Shaken Baby Syndrome prevention. While some may be aware of Shaken Baby Syndrome and know that shaking a baby is dangerous and harmful, many others have no idea how dreadfully trying a constantly crying baby can be.

Shaken Baby Syndrome is sometimes seen as an act perpetuated by a careless parent who doesn't know better. But just as often it can happen when a loving parent, feeling helpless and despondent over his or her inability to soothe a disconsolate infant, winds up shaking the baby out of despair.

This is where Click for Babies comes in.The purpose of Click for Babies is to raise awareness of a frequent cause of Shaken Baby Syndrome called the Period of Purple Crying. Knitters and crocheters can help by knitting or crocheting a purple baby cap that can be distributed to newborn babies and their parents. These caps not  only remind of the hazards of shaking a baby, but also help to educate parents about normal infant crying.

The Period of Purple Crying.

The fact is that all baby mammals, not just human beings, go through something called a "purple period." During this period, which in human beings lasts from about 2 weeks of age to 3 to 4 months, babies cry more often, especially in the evening. They are also often either resistant to soothing or are not always soothed by the same methods every time.

The good news is that while every baby goes through this period (though some babies cry far more than others during this period), it DOES end. This is especially important to share with new parents, who may feel not only helpless but also as though they have failed.

Raising Awareness through the Click of Needles.

Click for Babies refers to the sound of the clicking of knitting needles, although crocheters are, of course, equally welcome to participate. The Click for Babies website  offers free patterns, guidelines, and places to send caps.

Many states have their own Click for Babies programs for distributing caps to hospitals. For those who live in other states, there is a national Click for Babies office where caps can be sent to.

Click for Babies encourages sharing of the program through social media; they have Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest pages that can be used to spread the word.

Shaken Baby Syndrome is a tragedy that can be easily avoided, so let's all put our needles and hooks together and support the great cause of Click for Babies!

Purple Kitty Hat.

Size: New born
Hat measures 12 inches (30 cm) in diameter; length 5 inches (13 cm) from rim to crown.

Materials:

Size 4 mm (5 US) needles
DK weight yarn  Lilac and Purple
For nose ,eyes and mouth DK weight yarn black.

Tension:
21.5 sts= 4 inches (10 cm)

Instructions

Hat
Starting at brim, with Lilac yarn CO 64 sts and work in K2, p2 until brim measures 1 inch (3 cm) from beg.
Then work in St st

With Black , cast on 5 sts.
Row 1 Knit.
Rows 2 and 4 Purl.
Row 3 K2tog, k 1, k2tog - 3 sts.
Row 4 Purl.
Row 5 K3tog - 1 st.
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining st; pull to tighten.

FINISHING
Using photo as a guide, place Ears  and sew to each side of Hat about 2 inch apart. Sew Nose in place, embroider smile, 3 whiskers on each side of Nose, and eyes, using Stem or chain st. 

'Thoughtful Thursday' Cure Caps

'Made from the Heart to Cure the Brain'

Cure Caps. Chris Hempel founded this knitting caps charity in November of 2007 after her 5-year-old identical twins, Addi and Cassi, were diagnosed with a rare and fatal brain disease called Niemann Pick Type C. Children with this disease rarely live past the age of twenty -- Chris is literally fighting for the lives of her precious children.

Unfortunately, there are 7,000 known diseases in the world. Major pharmaceutical companies only invest and perform research for 200 or 3.5% of all diseases. Research for Chris' children is almost non-existent. She and her husband Hugh are taking on the battle single-handedly. Raising money for research is key in the battle for their children's lives.

The vision of this knitting charity is to sell hand-knit caps and raise money for collaborative brain research that includes Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS, Fragile X/Autism, and Niemann Pick Type C. 100% of the proceeds go directly for research.

Joined by their friend, Herah Osborne (the mother of twins who suffer from Fragile X/Autism), the Hempels inspire and encourage knitters to hand-knit and donate 100,000 Care Caps. And they actively search for a major sponsor to help market them.

Easy Fun Froggy Hat

Staying with the stash busting new years resolution I had some green yarn that needed using up so I decided to make a childs Froggy hat. Frogs are rather cute and this is a fun easy pattern with no complicated stitched or shaping.

Sizes 3 years (4-5 years, 6-7 years)

Finished Measurements
Hat circumference: 16 (18, 20)" (40.5 [45.5, 51]cm)
Materials
1 skein Green double knitting type yarn
Size 7 (4.5mm) 16" (40cm) circular needle
Size 7 (4.5mm) double-pointed needles, set of 5
Size 5 (3.75mm) double-pointed needles, set of 5
Stitch markers
Yarn needle
2 black buttons or 2 frog eyes, 3⁄4" (19mm) in diameter
Small amount of black worsted-weight yarn

Hat

Using the circular needle, cast on 72 (80, 88) stitches. Join, being careful not to twist stitches. Place a marker for the beginning of the round. Work in stockinette stitch (knit every round) until the piece measures 41⁄2 (5, 51⁄2)" (11.5 [12.5, 14]cm) from the beginning.

Using the larger double-pointed needles, cast on 20 stitches. Divide the stitches onto 4 needles-5 stitches per needle. Join, being careful not to twist stitches. Place a marker for the beginning of the round.
Rounds 1-4: Knit.
Round 5: On the first needle, k2tog, k to the end of the needle; on the second needle, k to the last 2 stitches, k2tog; on the third needle, k2tog, k to the end of needle; on the fourth needle, k to the last 2 stitches, k2tog-4 stitches remain on each needle.
Rounds 6-7: Repeat round 5 twice-2 stitches remain on each needle. Slip stitches from the first and second needles onto the first needle; slip stitches from the third and fourth needles onto the third needle. Cut the yarn, leaving a long end. Hold the first and third needles parallel to each other and use the yarn end to graft the stitches together.

Finishing
Sew a large button to one side of each Eye or attach a frog eye or embroider black circle and green french knot in center . Stuff the Eye with about 60" (152.5cm) of matching yarn. Sew Eyes to the top of the Hat. With black yarn, embroider a backstitch or chainstitch mouth and nose on the Hat. Weave in ends.

Pretty In Pink Baby Bonnet

Bonnets give a bit of postmodern flair to a classic design and truly substantial protection from the elements, this bonnet will keepyour little girl warm, stay on her head and add a bit of funky fashion flair to her wardrobe! 

This bonnet is knitted in a multi coloured baby soft double knitting type yarn in shades of pink and lilac.I love using a multicoloured yarn and particularly love the delicate shading in this yarn.

This little bunny has two little eyes.

I couldn't resist knitting this bunny hat, i had seen one very similar on sale in Next. Ofcourse this was nowhere near as expensive and took hardly any time at all to knit. The size in the photo is 3/6 months.
Bunny Hat Sizes

MATERIALS: baby double knit type yarn 1 ball each MC: White A: Pink

Set of four size 4 mm (U.S. 6) double- pointed knitting needles and pair of size 4 mm (U.S. 6) knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge for eyes- embroidery floss.

22 sts and 30 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

Lining:

Beg at top of crown, with A, cast on 8 sts leaving a 6 ins [15 cm] end. Divide sts evenly on 3 needles (2, 3, 3 sts). Join in rnd, placing a marker on first st.
1st rnd: Knit, inc 1 st in each st around. 16 sts. 2nd and alt rnds: Knit.
3rd rnd: *K1. Inc 1 st in next st. Rep from * around. 24 sts.
5th rnd: *K2. Inc 1 st in next st. Rep from * around. 32 sts.
7th rnd: *K3. Inc 1 st in next st. Rep from * around. 40 sts.

Shape top: 1st rnd: *K8 (9). K2tog. Rep from * around. 72 (80) sts.
2nd and alt rnds: Knit.
3rd rnd: *K7 (8). K2tog. Rep from * around. 64 (72) sts.
5th rnd: *K6 (7). K2tog. Rep from * around. 56 (64) sts.
Cont in this manner, dec 8 sts evenly around following alt rnds until there are 16 sts. Break yarn, leaving a long end. Draw end tightly through rem sts and fasten securely. Weave end at crown of lining tightly through cast on sts and fasten securely.
Fold Lining into Outer Hat along fold line. Fold up cuff as shown.
